Shirley Jackson, the famous horror writer, is currently experiencing a revival of her books through series such as The Haunting of Hill House.

In Shirley she is embodied by the great Elisabeth Moss. We met Shirley in the early 1950s when she lived in Vermont with her husband, the critic and professor Stanley Edgar Hyman. Stanley‘s assistant and his wife Rose are temporarily staying with them. Shirley feels that Rose is a muse for her latest novel, and both women are reluctant to take on the housewife role that so many women have come to expect at the time. The fi lm is not a biopic, it is a mixture of art and life to the point of the unsettling notion that mental illness can be a source of creative energy.
