Poetic drama about a child’s friendship with his grandmother in Argentina during the economic crisis.
Argentina, 2001. As the financial system collapses in the wake of the economic crisis, young Manuel’s family is forced to leave their apartment. They take refuge in the home of his grandmother, an eccentric woman who claims to see invisible intruders lurking in the darkened hallways and rooms. Despite his parents’ warnings— who dismiss these visions as contagious madness— Manuel feels drawn to the old woman. In the cramped atmosphere of the family home, a strange alliance forms between grandmother and grandchild…
In dense, fairy-tale-like imagery, director Matías Ferreyra interweaves a fragment of Argentina’s recent history with the intimacy of memory. With great delicacy, the camera immerses itself in the perceptions of a child for whom there seems to be no space, unfolding—through silent faces and enigmatic glances—a reflection on family and solitude, death and togetherness.
