A gentle character study about physicality and self-love.
Harvey (Benjamin Turnbull) is shy, lonely, and dissatisfied with his body. He comes across the gay magazine Cherub “for fat men and their admirers” and draws new hope from it, subsequently submitting a self-portrait to the magazine. „Cherub“ is a quiet exploration of the gentle side of self-empowerment and manages to do so with (almost) no dialogue. Harvey‘s character study is touching and empathetic – without falling prey to the clichés of “overcoming oneself” on the path to happiness.
The images created by director Devin Shears are an act of affection toward their subject through every camera shot. „Cherub“ is an ode to quiet filmmaking and the power of depicting the everyday. The low-budget production premiered at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival.
