With the ashes of her deceased adoptive mother in her possession, Fernanda returns to her home in midwestern Brazil after having been away for years. The young woman‘s appearance at her uncle‘s ranch shakes up her family‘s bourgeois façade. Driven by her unyielding desire for truth and justice, Fernanda tries to shed light on her mysterious past. When her investigations put her conservative uncle, who is currently campaigning for his re-election as mayor, in distress, Fernanda finds herself confronted with threatening consequences.
In her surreal-fantastic debut film, Flávia Neves virtuously links the search for one‘s own origins with Brazil‘s colonial past. At the center of the gripping
family story is the confrontation with outdated traditions, exploitative relationships and those who profit from them. Fogaréu is a story about the empowering attempt to break out of outdated structures and the hope for a new beginning.
