“With these nails we will destroy them,“ writes Hengameh Yagobifarah about the nails they wear to a demo against the AfD. At this point it is obvious: queer nails are powerful.
Our exhibition on queer nail art analyses the political potential of queer nail art. What utopias do the miniatures written on and extending the body create? What role does nail art play in queer body practices, for example in nails that function as queer codes? How do queer community and intimacy form in the mutual creation and design of nails? A particular focus will be on how artificiality, fakery, and superficiality – age old queer-hostile and misogynistic narratives – are satirised, and solemnly exaggerated by queer nail art.
Come by for queer history and queer joy! At the opening of the exhibition on the 11.10. Thams does Claws will perform with the interactive performance ’Object of Love`. Exhibition visitors are invited to present Thams with an object, photo, poem, song, pendant, or the like that means a lot to them. Thams will ask them about the meaning and develop a nail design on the nails of the visitors.
The performance ends when each participant takes home a design on their nails. Thams is a trans nail artist from Berlin, who creates a safe space for the queer community in their work.
About the curator
The exhibition is curated by Regine Eurydike Hader, cultural scientist and PhD student in art history. She works as a curator, has been with QFFM since 2020, writes for Missy Magazine, and works as a feminist and queer art educator for the Pinakothek der Moderne. Her work deals with resistance, excess, and contemporary queer aesthetics.
