QFFM presents diversity of films besides mainstream cinema and its heteronormative rules. Our festival program is focused on local as well as international productions and newly discovered queer-classics. We present the current international queer film scene within various festival sections including documentaries, animations, mini-series or feature films. We heartly welcome all sorts of queer film making!
Founded in 2015, QFFM | Queer Film Festival Munich is an independent cinematic institution that promotes diversity on the big screen and showcases films beyond hetero- and homonormative cinema. Through its film selection, the festival challenges stereotypes and highlights intersectional queer perspectives and aesthetics.
Central to the curation process is the question of who represents whom in the film landscape, in what ways, and what connotations arise from these portrayals. However, the festival goes beyond mere questions of representation and sees itself as a platform for filmmakers who approach queerness as a political, solidaric, and resistant concept. The works presented at the festival explore diverse ways of living and forms of sexual expression, while also questioning what is considered conventional or ‘normal.’
The idea that queerness is new and that precarious situations are treated as normal—requiring long negotiations for every inch of freedom—is a strategy found in the age-old toolbox of conservative dominance. Queer history is absent from every compulsory curriculum. Through its festival program, year-round screenings and discussions, special showings for school classes, and educational offerings, QFFM counters institutionalized ignorance with artistic visions of possible worlds and freedoms.
The festival is a project of Queer Culture e.V., a registered non-profit association composed of individuals from various areas of queer life. The aim of the association is to create, through its cultural offerings, a public space for intellectual, emotional, and action-oriented engagement.
